Frequently Asked Questions: Registration

Can I still register my child after the deadline?

Yes - however, once the deadline has passed, late fees will be applied and there is no guarantee of placement on a team. The board begins to form teams immediately after the deadline. Your child will be assigned as space becomes available.

What is An Alternative To Fundraisers? Is it mandatory?

The BHYSL used to conduct fundraisers to raise additional funds so that we could keep the registration amount low and still pay for training our coaches and referees, purchasing equipment, etc. We have decided instead to ask for a straight donation. This is not mandatory, we only ask that those who can afford it, consider giving.

Can my 4 year old play?

Four year olds may play if they turned four before August 1st of the previous year. This means that if your child is not old enough to play in the fall, he or she will also not be eligible to play in the spring. The spring is considered a continuation of the fall season.

Amherst Soccer Club has a program for 3 - 6 year old players.

What division should my child play in?

Birth Date Fall 2011 Division
August 1, 2007 - July 31, 2008 U4
August 1, 2005 - July 31, 2007 U6
August 1, 2003 - July 31, 2005 U8
August 1, 2001 - July 31, 2003 U10
August 1, 1999 - July 31, 2001 U12
August 1, 1995 - July 31, 1999 U16

Players may play one age division higher or lower than normal, but only with the approval of the Director of the Age Division being entered, and the coach of the team to which the player will be assigned. Players playing outside their normal Age Division must have a skill level appropriate for the Age Division being entered.

Due to the increasing amount of time the assignment process is consuming, there will be no longer be special requests for team placement. Parents volunteering to be a head coach or assistant coach may request to coach together. Players whose parent(s) are Head Coach, Assistant Coach will be assigned to their parent's team. Siblings in the same league will be assigned to the same team unless otherwise specified in writing at the time of registration. Remaining players will then be assigned to teams providing for a balance of skill level, gender, and town representation.

If you believe you have an exception to this policy, submit the request in writing to the Registrar at BHYSLadmin@gmail.com, or to: BYHSL, PO Box 658, Brookline, NH, 03033. No requests will be accepted via phone. The Registrar will review the request and present it to the Board of Directors for consideration. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Can I sign my child up in a different division?

Yes, you can select a different division (one up or one down) during the registration process. Your child must be physically and developmentally appropriate for the requested division. If you do this, please include a comment in the comment section of the registration form. If you have a question about division placement, please contact the BHYSL board at bhysladmin@gmail.com.

Volunteer Questions

What experience is needed to coach?

None. If you have coaching experience from another sport, it usually transfers well.  Check out our Training Philosophy for more information on individual Divisions.  We do offer Coach Training - in the Spring it is a Referee Training Class that we encourage all Coaches to take since you will learn the rules of the game and safety issues involved in the sport.  In August we sponsor Coaching Modules which will teach you drills to work on with the kids.  Please take advantage of these classes, they are sponsored by the BHYSL and are taught by the New Hampshire Soccer Association.  BHYSL covers all costs involved if you coach for us.

What experience is needed for Registration?

We have an online registration system - you need to be fairly savvy at using the computer and the internet.  Registrars will monitor the online registration system, resolve any issues that arise, bring special requests to the Board of Director's attention, and work with the Team Placers in the assignments of coaches and players.  This position requires 3-5 hours per week in the 2-3 months prior to the opening day of the season.

What is involved with Team Placement?

Each season we need volunteers for Team Placement.  Each Team Placer is responsible for a Division (U6, U8, U10, U12, U16).  They assign a Head & Assistant Coach to each team, then assign players to the teams (balancing boy/girl and skill levels).  After the teams are assigned, the Team Placers work with the President/Vice President to notify coaches of their assignments and player rosters.  They also need to place all late registrants on a team.  They are also the primary contact for each of the coaches in their division.  Approximately 3-5 hours in the month before opening game day. Basic computer skills and access to the internet required. Additional 2 hours will be needed to learn the system.

What is involved in Fields?

We need people here to help line the fields.  Depending on the number of people who volunteer, you would all work 1/2 day before the season starts.  This is to do all of the measuring and first markings of the season.  After that everyone is responsible for 1 or 2 weeks - making sure the lines are on the field before the games each weekend.

We are also always looking for new members to join our Board of Directors, please see Board of Directors for a description of each position.>
